Good morning, delegates!
My name is Carson Washington, and I am honored to serve as your SOCHUM chair this year.
Across the world, human rights are being challenged and rolled back, either by authoritarian governments desiring to maintain power or populist movements struggling for it. SOCHUM focuses on protecting and promoting fundamental civil liberties in the international community, including women’s, childrens’, and refugees’ rights; drug control; protection of indigenous peoples; and elimination of ethnic violence. During this committee, delegates will propose international standards and advise actions to help maintain those freedoms.
If you want to know more about me, I have competed in debate events at LAMP including Youth in Government and Speech and Debate, and am a member of HOSA. In my free time, I enjoy listening to music (Radiohead, Kanye West, and Kendrick Lamar are my favorite artists) along with binge watching TV (my favorite show is Breaking Bad). You may see me cheering for Alabama Football (Roll Tide!), the L.A. Lakers, and the San Francisco 49ers. I have competed in LIMUN since freshman year, and have received awards each year I participated.
If you all feel nervous, don’t be. I will facilitate this experience as best as I can, and I have selected interesting topics for substantive debate. Remember to research extensively on your country’s position, to speak confidently, and to collaborate with others on solutions, and this committee will be a success. I can’t wait to meet you all.
Sincerely,
Carson Washington
